SL residents march around Capitol Hill

Capitol Hill North - An anti-war rally in Second Life on Monday coincided with a Peace March in Washington, D.C. this past Saturday. Many individuals came and went as their schedules allowed, but at its peak, 126 residents participated in the march and rally in SL.

Residents met at RootsCamp on Progressive Island and proceeded over to Capitol Hill in SL. When a large group had gathered, all marched in a circular path around the two sims past all government buildings, ending back on the steps of the Capitol.

Many marchers carried picket signs such as “Avatars Against the War,” “Make Art Not War,” “End of an Error,” and “Absolut Corruption” showing Bush and staff in an Absolut bottle. Pink dresses were in style, distributed by Code Pink (a women for peace group) that said “No Peace, No Pussy.”

The rally lasted for approximately two hours. During the first hour and a half, residents shouted out messages of peace. There was no orderly method of speaking. Each spoke when they wished, adding their short phrase of hope and wish to end the war and bring the troops home. Amazingly, it was not chaotic. Many joined in a dance for peace and avatars wiggled wildly to their own tune of peace.

Hayduke Ebisu of Commonwealth Island commented “This is the quietest protest I’ve even been to!” No griefers were in attendance, but some suggested that the real griefers were all in Iraq.

Representatives from seven countries (France, Germany, Holland, Netherlands, U.K., Spain and Canada) were present along with residents of more than 15 U.S. states.

Justin Duell said “Let them hear our voices! Today, we cast aside all ties and stand together as one! Together, we can and WILL make a difference!” Delia Lake added “How many people could the U.S. heal and feed with just one month’s dollars for this horrid war?” “Restore U.S. dignity abroad – Impeach Bush!” shouted Little Gray. Josina Burgess added “Mr. Bush, you can stop now trying to prove to your daddy you do it better.” Francine Capra shouted “Depleted uranium, known as DU, is a highly dense metal that is a byproduct of the process during which fissionable uranium used to manufacture nuclear bombs and reactor fuel is separated from natural uranium. DU remains radioactive for about 4.5 billion years. That’s what is being used in Iraq.”
